How to Build Your Personal Brand

Whether you’re a weekend warrior busting your ass in your consulting job or an aspiring entrepreneur who just quit their job, there is no denying the importance of a personal brand in 2018.

If you’re an expert in your field, whether it’s photography, finance, or marine biology, doesn’t it make sense to build an asset that will serve you for as long as you live?

This is where a personal brand comes in.

When you build an online presence and establish yourself as an expert you gain authority that allows you to have greater control of your life and your future.

Here are a couple reasons why it’s a safe bet to start building your personal brand today:

  • You become your own boss
  • Better control of your life
  • Greater financial freedom

Now let’s break these down.

Become your own boss

be your own boss

When you are the expert you don’t need to take answers from anybody. People come to you for answers.

How so?

There is plenty of valuable information online—think Wikipedia—but many times, it’s not relatable or enjoyable to consume. If you can put a name, face, and personality to the information being delivered, it becomes much more powerful.

Take one second and think of any blogs, Youtube channels, or websites that you frequently visit.

Is there a face behind that content? Chances are, there is a reason you watch the same person over and over. They have something special that you relate to.

And guess what?

They call the shots. No one tells them how to procure or create the content that they deliver. They are their own boss!

If you have a skill you are good at or something you know how to do that others want to learn, there is a good chance someone will pay you for it.

After I sold my first dropshipping business, I had tons of people reaching out to me for information and details on my process. Hell, even one guy paid me $1,000 to talk with him on the phone for 2 hours.

And this is nothing new.

I spoke with friend of mine who runs the Enter China community. Besides the passive income he earns from the membership sign ups, he often does 1-on-1 business and crowdfunding consulting, earning upwards of $1,000 per hour!

How does that sound?

Better Control of your Life

When you grow and cultivate an audience around your area of expertise, you control the outcome of your life. You become the decision maker and you no longer have to answer to anyone.

Remember my friend from above?

Yeah that guy.

He actually turns down money… What a great problem to have!

And it’s all because of the value in his personal brand. Through his experiences and expertise in crowdfunding and manufacturing, he has businesses flocking to him for advice and strategy.

He isn’t worried about getting laid off or moving around for a new job. He controls his life, it doesn’t control him.

Greater Financial Freedom

financial freedom

Think power in numbers.

When you have a dedicated and passionate audience behind you, you have money.

There are always ways to monetize an audience. Information is incredibly powerful and people will pay for it. Just look at all of the New York Times Bestselling Authors who sell “Self Help” books.

Everyday people like you and me want information that will better our lives and we will happily hand over hundreds if not thousands of dollars to make it happen. It happens every single day.

Either through private coaching, affiliate marketing, informational courses, or books, you can make lots of money with this type of business model.

Going back to the example above, my friend makes upwards of $1,000 per hour for a consultation. 100 hours = $100,000. How would you like to work 100 hours and make 6 figures?

Does that sound like financial freedom to you?

Personal Branding in 2018

Personal branding is nothing new but I do believe this concept is starting to become more mainstream.

You will see a LOT of people starting to do this in 2018—coming out with their own Youtube channels, courses, and blogs and declaring themselves experts.

But, like anything else that starts to gain popularity, there will be a saturation point where it becomes much more difficult to gain followers or attract an audience.

More people are catching on to the powerful marketing tools that are so readily available in this day and age.

So, without further ado, here are 3 simple things you can do to start building your personal brand:

  1. Create A Website – A website built around your name and what you do allows people to find you online as well as see that you are legitimate. Your website should offer value or information that is useful to your targeted audience. The more that you can offer, the more impactful your website will be towards your personal brand.
  2. Start a Youtube Channel – It’s no surprise that video is the most popular type of consumable content—it’s easy to watch, digest, and understand. Create a channel around your area of expertise. Are you good at photography? Make videos about how you like to take photos and other techniques that you use. History buff? Create a channel where you talk about significant pieces of history and bring a level of enthusiasm that others aren’t. Over time, you will start to gain traction. Believe it or not, there is an audience out there for nearly every conceivable niche you can fathom.
  3. Make a Facebook fan page – People are spending more and more time on social media so it only makes sense to get in front of those eyes if you’re trying to build your personal brand. Once again, a Facebook Page built around your passion or expertise will help legitimize you and position you as an authority in your field. From here you can start running paid ads to generate leads, post your blog content and Youtube videos or open up topics for discussion with your audience.

Together, these three simple things will do wonders for creating your personal brand and establishing yourself as an authority.

Milk the Cow

monetize the audience

Now you may be wondering, why is this important?

Well, since a large portion of this blog is about how to make money let’s see if you can connect the dots. When you have a personal brand and several different sources of traffic where people are consuming your content, you can eventually monetize this audience.

If people are really enthusiastic about what you’re doing and loving the content that you’re providing, you better believe that they are willing to pay you for additional resources.

You can earn money through affiliate programs, coaching sessions, or courses that you may offer down the road. And the beauty of this business model is that it’s incredibly scalable and often recurring in nature.

Let’s do a simple example to demonstrate my point.

Say you have created a Facebook group around DIY scrapbooking where you share tips, secrets, and information regarding this wonderful hobby that you love.

Over the course of a year or so you’ve grown your Facebook page to 25,000 fans who are passionate and dedicated to the content that you provide. Your audience loves your content so much that they will listen to almost any suggestion you have.

A scrapbooking company reaches out to you after noticing the popularity of your page and tells you that they’ll pay you 25% commissions on every DIY Scrapbook Kit you sell from their store. The company charges $50 for their kit and they give you a special link and send you a free kit to try out.

You make a post on your Facebook page about the wonders of this kit and how much you love it. You explain that anyone who would like this kit can get a discount with your link. Out of the 25,000 people in your group, 3% choose to buy.

25,000 x 3% = 750 people

750 x $50 = $37,500

Your commission = $37,500 x 25% = $9,375

You just made bank in one or two days.

And this is just the Facebook Fan Page. You could do a Youtube video review, a blog post and even blast it out to an email list.

Do you see the potential here?

This is just a random example but this is not far from reality. I personally know guys that have $1,000 courses and they get 5-10 people signing up EVERY DAY! How does $5-$10k/day sound?

They are able to do this because they have built up a personal brand and established themselves as a leader. People trust their opinion and genuinely appreciate the content and value that they provide.

Take Action!

take action

All this info is of no use if you don’t take steps to make it happen. Start by taking baby steps and follow these actionable items below:

  1. Write down 10 things you’re passionate about.

  2. Think of a website name that you could create based around 2 or 3 of these passions (if you can’t think of a unique name, simply use your own first and last name for the domain. You can always create a redirect to a different domain name in the future).

  3. Choose 1 passion that you feel the most enthusiastic about and purchase a domain and build your website (It’s not hard. Google How to Build A Website).

  4. Begin writing or posting high quality content as frequently as possible.

  5. Rinse and repeat with a Youtube Page and Facebook Fan Page.

  6. Profit

This stuff obviously doesn’t happen overnight but I’m trying to drive home a point.

I started this blog over 2 years ago and had no idea what I wanted to write about. Without hesitating or overthinking, I just started documenting my journey from corporate life to aspiring entrepreneur. Now today, 2 years later, I’m just starting to narrow down my focus and figure out what I want this blog to be about.

Along the way, I’ve learned so much about marketing and personal branding and now I’m excited to put it to the test using these same strategies I wrote about above.

2018 is the year I go hard on building up my personal brand and actively growing my blog, Youtube, and Facebook pages. I’m excited for the journey to come and look forward to documenting and sharing everything I learn as I go.

Stay tuned and if you haven’t already, Please Subscribe to My Blog, Youtube Channel, and like me on Facebook.

Happy New Year!
